Latter Day Saints Funerals

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Funeral Services and Traditions

  • In the LDS faith, after passing the body is promptly brought to the funeral home.
  • Prior to the funeral service, members of the LDS community will come to the funeral home to perform a traditional dressing of the body in temple clothing. Male church members will perform the dressing ritual for male deceased, and female church members for female deceased.
  • An LDS funeral is typically held within one week of death. The funeral service will take place in a church or funeral home. Usually, a viewing is held an hour before the funeral service.   The service is normally conducted by the bishop of the deceased’s congregation. The family will choose if they would like to have an open or closed casket.   The service will include traditional hymns and other sacred music along with prayers and scripture readings.  Non-LDS guests are permitted to attend the service.  Modest attire is encouraged.  After the service, guests will attend a graveside service at the cemetery.
  • Burial is preferred in the LDS faith, but cremation is also permitted.
