Russian Orthodox Funerals

Russian Orthodox Funeral Services

  • Russian funeral practices commonly follow the Russian Orthodox Church customs to help guide the soul of the deceased.
  • Before the service, the funeral home will wash and dress the deceased in white. A headband of paper or cloth is sometimes placed in the persons forehead.
  • A viewing will be held either a day before the service or an hour before the funeral service.
  • Funeral services can be held at the funeral home or church. During the funeral service, a priest will lead the attendees in readings from scripture, hymns, and Psalms and sprinkle the casket with holy water.  Mourners will circle the open casket in a counterclockwise direction at the end of the funeral service.
  • The deceased is then brought to the cemetery for a graveside service and final prayers.
